For Students with Signficant Difficulties in Reading & Writing
Our LIC (Language Intensive Curriculum) integrates assistive technology with the nationally recognized Wilson Reading System to create a classroom environment where students can engage with the material intellectually without the barriers of decoding, spelling, comprehension and working memory.
About Wilson Reading System
We use small group instruction in The Wilson Reading System - a carefully sequenced program that teaches word structure and language to develop basic reading and writing skills. Landmark College Wilson instructors are certified by the Wilson Reading organization. Many of our faculty have extensive backgrounds in other reading programs such as Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell, and find Wilson to be a dynamic approach for older students. Students who have deficiencies in phonologic awareness and/or orthographic processing benefit from Wilson's explicit, systematic, and multi-sensory approach to learning to read and spell.
Eligibility for Wilson Reading Instruction
Wilson small-group reading instruction is available to eligible students. Students' prior experience with Wilson Reading is diverse. Accordingly, Landmark Wilson groups start at step one with review and may progress as far as step nine.
Students are eligible to receive Wilson small group reading instruction under the following conditions:
- You are placed in the Language Intensive Curriculum when first enrolled; or,
- You move out of the LIC, wish to continue with the program, are willing to make room for it in your schedule, and the College has available slots in a Wilson section; or,
- You are a returning student to Landmark, although not in the LIC, but request Wilson screening after decoding emerges as a learning issue, and the LIC Coordinator and Wilson Supervisor determine that Wilson instruction is appropriate and a section is available.
Students are not eligible to receive Wilson small group reading instruction under the following conditions:
- You have demonstrated a lack of commitment to the Wilson program by not attending classes regularly over a period of 2 semesters and have been warned or administratively withdrawn
Attendance in Wilson Reading Instruction Small Groups
Wilson small group reading instruction is an intensive program that requires regular attendance to make progress. Missing a class negatively affects the individual student as well as the group. For these reasons, a student may be Administratively Withdrawn from a group if they accrue enough absences to affect your ability to maintain your place in your group, and/or at the discretion of the instructor.
About Assistive Technology
At Landmark, Assistive technology is strategically integrated throughout the curriculum. Our commitment to this integration begins with the recognition that being skilled in using information technology is essential for academic study, professional careers, and lifelong learning. However, we go further, recognizing that for students with learning disabilities and AD/HD, tools and learning strategies that incorporate technology may be absolutely vital to realizing their full potential. Integrating assistive technology (such as Kurzweil and InspirationT) into the classroom creates a learning environment in which students can actively participate in the learning process without the overwhelming obstacles caused by difficulties with decoding, comprehension or working memory. These powerful tools can help improve fluency and comprehension.
