Our Academic Values

We strive to create and foster a collaborative community in which commitment to mission, experience, research, reflection, and dissemination in the process of teaching, learning, and support for students are core values in the work of faculty and staff. In this environment, we consider students our partners in learning; we value their wholeness, humanity, and resourcefulness; we embrace the strengths and challenges they bring to their learning and our teaching; and we care about them as individuals, working in groups and one-on-one with them so that each student can reach his or her greatest academic potential.

The Philosophy behind Our Curriculum

Landmark College's associates degrees set high standards for academic performance, allowing graduates to transfer to colleges of their choice - and succeed. The College's general education goals and curriculum create opportunities for students to develop and practice academic skills and strategies in a way that builds from semester to semester. We believe in presenting high expectations while operating at the level where each student is prepared to learn and succeed.

The First Year Experience: Four Points of Entry

Upon acceptance to Landmark College, students place into one of four Points of Entry:

First Year Academic Programming at Landmark College is committed to supporting new students through a welcoming community and integrated academic experience. Transitioning students, especially those with LDs and ADHD, benefit from an intentional approach to education that acknowledges the differing needs of developing learners. Through curricular offerings and academic advising, we provide an intellectual framework that introduces students to the cognitive, physical, and affective dimensions of learning. We inform our best practices through current research and practical experiences in order to provide this exceptional collegiate environment.

Our Network of Support Services

For students to transfer effectively to four-year programs, they need to develop self-understanding, self-advocacy, and the ability to use support resources. For this reason, the academic program's network of support are similar to services at other colleges. However, Landmark College's mission is to define a model of effective education for individuals with learning differences, and our support services uphold this goal.

The resources available to students include: support offices, focused on self-understanding and academic planning; several centers for academic support that provide supplemental instruction in various skill areas; coaching services; and a coursework-support center that provides assistance with setting immediate goals and getting work done. There is also a range of traditional student services, such as counseling, health, and the residence life program.

At the center of this network of services is the one-on-one work that takes place between the academic advisor and the student. The role of the advisor is framed differently at Landmark College than at most colleges. Our advisors excel in helping students to manage their academic programs, informing students about resources, assisting with academic planning, supporting students in the development of self-understanding and self-advocacy skills, acting as the primary contact for parents in the case of dependent students, and responding when students experience difficulties.
